The Example of John the Baptist
30He must increase, but
I must decrease.
(John 3:30)
The Example of Joseph
15And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it." 16So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace." (Gen. 41:15-16)
The Example of Peter & John
11 Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch which is called Solomon's, greatly amazed. 12So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: "Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go. 16And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. (Acts 3:11-16)
The Example of Barnabas & Paul
8
And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a
cripple from his mother's womb, who had never walked. 9This man
heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had
faith to be healed, 10said with a loud voice, "Stand up straight
on your feet!" And he leaped and walked. 11Now when the people
saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian
language, "The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!" 12And
Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief
speaker. 13Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of
their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending to sacrifice
with the multitudes.
14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore
their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out 15and
saying, "Men, why are you doing these things?
We also are men with the same nature as you,
and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the
living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are
in them. (Acts 14:8-15)
The Example of the Apostle Paul
10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. (1 Cor. 15:10)
5Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of
anything as being from ourselves, but
our sufficiency is from God, 6who
also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant.
(2 Cor. 3:5)
God's Word to Us
18For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends. (2 Cor. 10:18)
6But
He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
"God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble."
(James 4:6)
10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. (James 4:10)
